Visiting Abelina

At this point, due to the fact Abelina is on isolation, for a minor bacterial infection. As well as being exhausted they are asking people not to bring their children to the hospital. On top of that they have restricted visiting hours between 4-7! If you have another time in mind cal California Pacific Medical Center on Castro and speak to her nurse.

Abelina

We just arrived home after being in San Francisco nine days straight! We were able to see Abelina everyday, as well as the wave of emotions she encounters. Most days she was very up beat and positive. Although, after her short stint in the Critical Care the Unit, she was taxed. Her blood pressure dipped to dangerously low levels as well as being dehydrated. I felt this was unacceptable and made certain to express my dissatisfaction,, numerous times until I was heard. Now, Abelina receives her 2 liters of fluid a day from a nurse as well as having her blood pressure checked more frequently. Just as she started to regain her strength, a very forceful, deep throated, European nurse raised her voice to Angel. This was very upsetting to Abelina! At the time she did not have her pacimer valve in (for her trachea) so she could not speak, but everyone in the room could read her lips! Then she began to cry and continued to cry for most of the day. As we tried to resolve this unnecessary event. After going to that days, charge nurse a series of events happened. First we got Christina (the not so delightful nurse) to renter Abelina's room per her request. Abelina then told her," you can do anything to me, but don't ever hurt my kids"! She then asked the nurse to apologize, she said, "I have apologized to you Abelina, I will not apologize to your son." Nurse Christina then stormed out of room 351! At this point I had enough... If any of you know me very well, when I have had enough watch out ( I am like Abelina in this respect). Although, Abelina can give a verbal bashing like none other. So, I stormed into the nurses station, meeting Christina eye to eye. I then spoke at her in a very loud and stern tone, not carrying who was around me. I said something to the effect of, "do you have any idea of what this boy has been through? He watched his father shoot his mother, there were 15 entry and exit wounds! Are you aware of the story? " She replied, "I am very aware of the story!" : I replied then why don't you get off your pedestal and go apologize to that boy?" Again she refused. I then, in even a louder voice exclaimed, "then you are in the wrong business lady." I looked up and was faced with, every Doctor and nurse in this 100'x 100' foot space, frozen in their tracks. It almost seemed as if they were ready to clap, but due to their political correctness held back. I then made my way back to Abelina's room were I was told bye our mutual friend Wendy, she could hear me, not every word, but I guess my voice carried. You see I like Abelina stand up for my loved ones. When I saw her suffering over an insensitive, self righteous less of a human being, I was pissed! Needless to say, the not so gentle nurse Ratchet, will not be lucky enough to assist our Wonder Woman, Abelina! The next day, we were greeted by an ever jovial Abelina.

Now that have ranted an raved, I will let you in on her improvements. She has been able to swipe a wash rag over her face, with some gentle assistance. As, well as use a fork that is bent in such away that it resembles a Caterpillar. Her Hard collar came off at the beginning of last week, it was then replaced with a soft collar, like you might get at the chiropractor. Except, they made a makeshift hole in the center for her Trachea! Speaking of her Trachea the ENT also came in last week and did another excruciatingly test. Were they actually stick a tube through her nose all the way back down through her throat. Unfortunately this was the same day we encountered nurse Ratchet. As a result of the test, as well as her ability to cough up her fluids. Abelina, could have her trachea. sewn up any day!

Oh jeez, where do i even start? My brother hector and i just moved to San Francisco the 4th of this month, and since then we have been at my aunts side. It's amazing how well she has been doing. A week or so ago she test drove her chair for the first time. She said it was great to finally move on her own, and I could tell how excited she was by the look she had on her face. The chair has five speeds, and she drove it using the 1st speed. She joked by saying " Just wait, I'm going to be going 90 miles an hour in a few weeks!" It was funny because earlier that day we talked about her always getting out of speeding tickets. She is such a character -I love it! Every time I go and visit her we joke, and talk about all the good times . She's a busy lady these days- everyday consists of nonstop appointments and visitors. Please keep the letters, and all the support coming her way. Every time I say " Tia you have a new letter!" her face lights up. Keep her in your prayers.

love,
eli

Abelina update 3/25/2008

Spending time with my aunt since I have arrived to this city, has been hard yet amazing.. we share stories from back when we would come visit her when we were younger. To feeding her homemade mexican food (because she will not eat the mystery meat from the hospital) to massaging her arms and making sure she is comfortable at all times.. I have loved being able to spend time with her.. watching movies with her, and just trying to be myself when I'm with her and learning so much from all the nurses and what she needs .. and what she wants done.. its so important and vital to always be aware of what's going on.. On a lighter note.. I just always try and goof around with her.. because that's how our relationship always was.. I remember earlier this week.. she had asked for a drink of water.. and I said... Of course.. Ill give you some water.. and I tricked her and gave her some of the drink she hates most (ensure) and she just looked at me with those eyes like.."Are you kidding me?!" and she couldn't stop laughing.. But spending all this time with her has been an experience itself and I wouldn't have had it any other way.. Im so glad I was able to help. I will be starting school March 31st so I wont be able to go see her as much as I would like before she moves to Arizona... but I know she will be proud.. and thats all I need to know.

Abelina Magana/Volunteers needed

I know it has been several days sent I have had an opportunity to keep you all abreast of Abelina's status. Being that, I have been in San Francisco since last Thursday! Unfortunately, we had a little bit of a scare! On Wednesday night her blood pressure went way down and the nurses were unable to find her veins due to dehydration. So, thanks to one of Abelina's visitors we were notified. It just goes to tell you how important patient advocates are. On Wednesday night when she was admitted into the Critical Care Unit at CPMC, no one in her family or on her health care directive were notified. Luckily, the blood pressure was managed, she became stable and they were able to give her an IV. But for those of you that have loved ones in any hospital, it is quite evident that an extra pair of eyes and ears is always preferable.

Abelina's spirits took a dip for one day, she was feeling as if she took a step backwards. But with a little dose of friends and family, she is back on track!

am looking for some volunteers on the 26th and 27th of this month, to sit with Abelina. I would need someone from 12:00 until 4:00 pm and then a second shift, from 3:00 until 8:00, for both days. Her niece and nephew Eli are moving into their dorms on these days and I want to make sure that these shifts are covered. If you are available, please email me at the address at the top of the blog. Or call me at 415-302-3496!

Thanks

Abelina

What an amazing thing to get a phone call from Abelina. Some of you have received calls from her and almost fell over standing. She is trying to get back to normal and boy do we all no how she loves to talk on the phone, just ask her kids! We brought her her telephone and computer when she arrived at CPMC a few weeks ago! Almost immediately she wanted to listen to her music downloaded on Itunes, with the music , came a slide show. Oh and then she heard her phone for the very first time, she said," Wow, I really missed that sound". So if you have her cell number she is taking calls and if she does not answer leave a message, I'm sure she will get back to you!

Also, John I and the kids took her her fist Starbucks extra foamy latte and a snikerdoodle. The picture I am downloading is an image of just that. Keep the letters, visits and phone calls coming. The last thing I want for Abelina is to feel lonely!

Thanks

Abelina in her bebe sweatsuit we got her for her Birthday! This was her first outfit in five months!

Today was another great day! My sister Tonya, Suzy Fitzpatrick and I had a lovely visit with Abelina. When we were arriving the physical therapist were changing her into her new pink sweat suit. She told me three times Ronna bought her the pale pink jogging suit and of course with her Coach tennis shoes, she looked adorable. What was great is the fact that it had been awhile since Suzy or my sister had seen her and they were so impressed with her improvements. We watched as the physical therapist maneuvered and stretched her petite little arms. She did not want to miss one bit of our conversation, so she followed our eyes and mouths asking probing questions. "What? When?I did not hear you!"! It was like old times sitting by her side on her couch drinking tea and listening her funny stories! It really is healing for all involved.

Don't forget to get your visits in soon!

Update

Abelina is still doing phenomenal, the amazing thing is you never hear her complain! She is getting dressed, smiling, eating and joking. She talks a lot about her future, being in real estate, being a mom, living in Arizona. For those of you that did not know Abelina and the kids will be moving to Phoenix as soon as the first week in April. So if you have been planning to visit and have not yet taken the opportunity, this is a good time! We will miss all of them so much, but know that the support of her family is best for them. Abelina has five siblings in Arizona who all look forward to helping their sister and her three beautiful children.

So feel free to go and visit and remember to leave her your contact information.

Rehabillitation

Abelina safely made it to California Pacific Rehab yesterday around 2:30. Other than the ambulance going to the wrong hospital, it all went smooth. Abelina did not seem to mind because she seem to enjoy the EMT's company very much. Anyhow, I was told she will have an evaluation today by the PT's then come up with a treatment plan. Basically she will start out her days getting dressed and heading to the gym! Her workout on weekdays in 3 hours and weekends and 1 1/2. So remember before visiting to gives the nurses station call. Otherwise you could be waiting for sometime.

We look forward to her new chapter!

Abelina Update

Abelina is eating! Very small portions of hospital food and under strict supervision. She did not get a baked potato, although she had some dissatisfying mashed potatoes.

It looks very promising for her big move on Monday. As long as the doctors gives approval Monday Morning. Again it is really important that she stays healthy prior to being moves. Please do not go if you are sick!

Thanks
