Abelina Update

Today was another one of those days, that when you leave the hospital you have hope, you are inspired by the magnificent Abelina.  I got there early and was able to spend a good two uninterrupted hours of girl time.  We had our normal conversations about how magnificent she is and in return she would tell me how much she loves me.  This is a great part of our routine! Then I had the pleasure of seeing her beautiful sister Hilda and her pillar of strength, the woman from whom she gets her name Abelina (her mother).

With the help of a Hoyer lift, Robin her occupational therapist,  Hilda and myself were able to get Abelina in her wheelchair today.  Abelina was rolled from side to side in order to put what looks like a small hammock under her tiny body.  After positioning the Hoyer lift over her just wright, the straps to the hammock like object, were hooked to the metal hooks on the Hoyer. Robin then used a pump to hoist her into the air.  She was so pleased with herself as well as this method of getting her out of bed, due to the fact it is pain free.  Once she was in the air he rolled the Hoyer, widened it's legs around her wheel chair and positioned her directly on top of the big black wheelchair.  He then lowered her down, strapped her in and there you have it.

While all this was going on her lawyer Debra arrived, so the three of us were able to go out into the courtyard to discuss her personal matters, Abelina is so in tune with everything going on. You could see her listening to her so intently, asking a lot of questions and of course making necessary decisions.  Anyhow after 30 minutes of being outside, it was time to take her in, she had to be hooked back to the I.V., as well as monitoring her blood sugar.  Although it certainly was a nice change of scenery, even if it was business!

But the most exciting news of the day is that Abelina is on her way to rehabilitation in San Francisco and could be leaving as soon as tomorrow.  She will be going to California Pacific Medical Center on Cesar Chavez and 27th st.   We are very excited to see what the future holds for her and as you know I will keep you posted.
